At or about 18:51 hours, crews were dispatched for a reported commercial structure fire at the corner of Woodstock Avenue and Melrose Street. Dispatch advised responding units that it was reported that the roof was on fire.
Upon the arrival of 278 Truck, 278 Deputy 1 observed fire coming from the roof eaves of a large 3 story apartment building and quickly called for a 2nd alarm. Two minutes later, a 3rd alarm requested and 13 minutes after that, a 4th alarm was requested.
Due to high winds from passing storms, the fire quickly progressed and there were multiple portions of the building that collapsed. There were two other homes about 3 feet away on one side of the building and crews did their best to keep the fire from catching those structures on fire. The entire rear of the apartment building ultimately collapsed.
Power had to shut off for several blocks due to downed hi voltage power lines and remained out for more than 12 hours.
Crews battled the blaze for several more hours until it was ultimately placed under control. Crews were subsequently released as they picked up. No serious injuries were reported.
